This time, the great filmmaker Werner Herzog tells the true story of soldier Odona, who spent 29 years on the island he was assigned to, which has been the subject of many movies and books.

Successful director Werner Herzog goes to Tokyo to stage the opera Chushingura in 1997.

Japanese soldier Onoda, who was assigned to Lubang Island in the Philippines during World War II and was told not to give up defending the island at all costs until the imperial army returned, resists for months, years and decades in his Don Quixote-like struggle without giving up. The soldier, who is completely unaware of the fact that the war has already ended and the developments in the world, has only one news waiting patiently in the forest, where he has loosened his tongue over time: Japan’s victory.

This time, the great filmmaker Werner Herzog tells the true story of Onoda, a soldier who spent 29 years on the island he was assigned to, which has been the subject of many movies and books.

“A wonderful first novel.”
The New Yorker

“A meticulously written, lyrical tale… In Herzog’s feverish search for dazzling truths, he offers readers a gateway to human madness, self-discipline, and domination – surely his life’s work.”
The Washington Post

“A striking story ranging from obsession to madness, from the master of this narrow but productive genre.”
Kirkus Reviews
