This Book Contains Music: Haruki Murakami – Norwegian Wood (1987)

Norwegian Wood is one of the books that attracted my attention by the author, whom I met about a year and a half ago. It is the second Murakami book I read after “Kafka on the Shore”. I was deeply impressed by the author’s life story and I had been waiting for a long time to read this book. I looked at the cover of the book for a long time and only with the cover design of the book, I fell into impossible dreams. I wanted to buy the book without having any idea about the content of the book. The pornographic elements in the book raised questions in the minds of some readers like me. Although I know that everyone can derive different emotions and meanings from a work, I could not help but question whether these elements were appropriate to the general narrative of the book…

The book is generally written in a fluent language. The author states that it depends on what the reader expects to understand the work and what they want to get from it. In some cases, even one sentence may be enough, while sometimes even pages of analyses may not be able to fully convey the author’s message. Each page of the work makes the reader feel Murakami’s characteristic style and opens the door to many different emotions.

The book offers music lists to the readers, allowing them to read the work by combining it with music. I, too, felt myself there while reading the work by turning on the music mentioned in the book and visualised the scenes I imagined. Murakami’s frequent use of his connection with music in his books adds a different dimension to the atmosphere of his books.

Norwegian Wood is a work that can be easily read by many readers. However, even though it is criticised by some readers because of the pornographic elements in the book, it should not be forgotten that each reader can derive different feelings and meanings from a work. The book presents the reader with a work that deals with themes such as the meaning of life, love, loss and hope. The author’s poetic language makes the work even more impressive. Readers can easily connect to the lives and stories of the characters in the book.

As a result, the book “Norwegian Wood” is a fluent work that gives readers different emotions with the author’s language and narration. This book, which is liked by many readers, is undoubtedly one of Haruki Murakami’s best works. The work gives the reader the opportunity to look at different aspects of life and takes readers on an unforgettable journey with the characters in the book.

Enjoy your reading.
