“Architectural Education in Turkey: A History of (De)Institutionalization” will be given by Uğur Tanyeli at Salt Galata Floor -2, Auditorium on January 20, 2024 at 15.00.
Architectural Education in Turkey: Thresholds of Institutionalization from the 18th Century to the Present, architect-academician Uğur Tanyeli will examine the transformations of architectural education over the course of more than two centuries. Beginning with a single school integrated with military service and engineering, and spreading to more than a hundred schools across Turkey today, he will evaluate architectural education with a focus on the academic landscape and institutions.
The program is free and open to all. The program will be held in Turkish. The application form must be filled out for participation.
Uğur Tanyeli was born in Ankara in 1952. He received his master’s degree in architecture and architectural history from Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts and his doctorate from Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture. He was awarded the title of associate professor in 1992 and professor in 1998. He served as the founding dean of Mardin Artuklu University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture between 2011-2015, as the dean of Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Architecture between 2015-2018, and as the dean of Istanbul Şehir University Faculty of Architecture and Design between 2018-2020. His research focuses on Turkish modernity in the context of the physical and spatial-social environment starting from the 16th century of the Ottoman Empire.
