Cy Bellman, an American settler and widowed father, is filled with strong feelings of wonder and fascination when he hears the news: The bones of giant prehistoric animals have been found in the deep swamps of Kentucky’s interior. Intrigued, Cy sets out to find out if the rumors of giant beasts still living are true, leaving his daughter Bess to fend for herself. But surprises, coincidences, and traps await him on this perilous journey across the Mississippi River and into the desolate frontier.

“It has all the raw, direct power of fairy tales or legends… Carys Davies is a writer of immense talent.
Colm Tóibín

“In some ways, Batı reads like an extended fairy tale. Yet one cannot help wanting to run and find the dinosaurs. Its power lies in its belief, its fascination, and its simple, pure reality in the face of an incomprehensible world.
Cynan Jones
