The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced that the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Norwegian writer Jon Fosse…
Fosse’s plays are among the most frequently staged plays around the world.
Born in 1959, Fosse has produced 40 plays as well as many novels, essays, children’s books and translated works.
Fosse will also receive a prize worth 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million).
The Academy said Fosse’s work “blends Norwegian history with artistic technique” and “reflects human concerns and dilemmas”.
Describing Fosse’s work as “innovative”, the Academy stated that the author “expresses the unspeakable”.
Candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature are recommended by the Swedish Academy and other world literary academies and institutions, previous laureates, and professors of literature at universities.
