God-Given Ugliness: Envy (Kıskanmak) (2009)

The movie Envy (Kıskanmak) , which was released to the audience on November 6, 2009, takes place in Zonguldak in the 1930s. I can list the names in the cast of the film for you as follows;

Berrak Tüzünataç with the character of Mükerrem, Nergis Öztürk with the character of Seniye, Bora Cengiz with the character of Nüzhet, Serhat Tutumluer with the character of Halit and many more great actors whose names I cannot write here. The cast of the film is really good.

I watched this film in 2014, I came across it on Puhu Tv and without doing any preliminary research, when I saw Zeki Demirkubuz, I thought, what the hell, I’ll watch it. I’m glad I did, the film is actually an adaptation of Nahid Sırrı Örik’s novel Kıskanmak. The film takes its name from the book. When asked why he made this book into a film, Demirkubuz said the following

“Although the novel Envy seems to be a story that sits on human themes such as ugliness, beauty, envy and passion, I thought of filming it because it is basically a story that deals with human destiny. The story of Seniha, whose destiny is determined by her God-given ugliness, going from being the one who submits to this destiny to being the one who writes the destiny of the beauty she hates, attracted my interest because it is one of the very few stories about the human soul. I thought that a story that questions beauty from the side of ugliness and tells this story by undressing, without shying away from it, would make a contribution to the endeavour to understand and express human suffering.”

We see that the abstract feelings in the book become concrete in the film. The film, which focuses on a brother’s insane envy of his older brother, reflects the period very well. Halit, the older brother of the film, is an engineer, and he has to go from Istanbul to Zonguldak with his engineering duty. Halit’s wife, Mükerrem, is so beautiful that she is the centre of everyone’s attention. Seniye, the envy sister, does not like Mükerrem at all, even though they seem to get along well, and tries to save her from her brother whenever she can.

Seniye gets the perfect opportunity at the 29 October Republic Ball. The Engineer and his family who attend the ball cannot return to their life before the ball. Because at the ball, Mükerrem attracts the attention of a handsome and flirtatious young Nüzhet. Her already troubled marriage and the presence of her older husband push her to question love and find love in her own way. Nüzhet secretly meets with Seniye, who is insanely envy of her brother, and the sister-in-law, who has a great opportunity, do you think these meetings are secret?

In the film, the emotion of the characters is conveyed to the audience. The film, which is based on the feeling of envy, was shaped around this feeling in every event and did not reflect the emotions to us in a great way, but made us live. While watching the film, I was sometimes Seniye, sometimes Mükerrem, sometimes Nüzhet, but I was most afraid of being Halit. At every moment of life, we are intertwined with all the opposite emotions, and our experiences decide which emotion will prevail.

Finally, I will not end my article without mentioning Nergis Öztürk’s acting. A great acting leaves behind a delicious flavour…
