Written by F. Kuang, Sarı Yüz (originally known as Yellowface) is a striking and satirical novel that boldly examines the darker aspects of the literary world. Translated into Turkish by İthaki Publications, the work deeply addresses current and controversial issues such as cultural exploitation, racism and the effects of social media.
Plot
At the center of the novel is June Hayward, a white American who has never been successful in her writing career. After the sudden death of her Chinese-American writer friend Athena Liu, June steals her unpublished manuscript and publishes it as her own work under the pseudonym “Juniper Song”. While the book is a huge success, June’s fraud is in danger of being exposed on social media. While a mysterious Twitter account threatens June’s secret, the extent to which the character can go and the consequences of this lie increase the tension of the novel.
Themes and Criticisms
While Yellow Face questions diversity and representation in the literary world, it also boldly addresses sensitive issues such as cultural plunder and racism. It also reveals the lynching culture and pressure of social media on individuals. Stephen King described the novel as “hard to put down and even harder to forget”, while The New York Times described it as “one of the most important books of the 21st century”.

Yellow Face has attracted great attention since its publication and has been honored with many awards:

In addition, the film rights of the novel have been purchased and work has begun on a cinema adaptation.
